I shopped around to find a new wallet. I wanted one with little compartments for memory cards as well as the usual credit card and note sleeves. What I found was that they were all the same except for the colour and outer design. A few credit card slots and a note sleeve. So I decided to have a go at designing my own. The design was drawn and the leather cut. I decided to try and sew the wallet on the sewing machine. This caused no end of problems, the leather being soft, curled and moved with the pressure of the foot and the tension of the thread.
As you can see the results were not pretty. A new approach was needed, so I decided to make a new design and hand stitch all the wallet. The memory card holders were marked out for stitching with a sewing tracing wheel. These are a lot cheaper than the leather overstitching wheel but do the same job. Then the boring part of hand stitching, the hole punching. Once that was done the sewing began.
The next job was to wet form the credit card holder into shape, mark and hole punch it
ready for stitching.
Both the memory card holder and the credit card holder were then stitched onto the note holder.
This was all then stitched to the first part of the main wallet. The main wallet consisted of two pieces of leather stuck back to back with the outer piece forming a hinge for the wallet. I will explain later…
Once the cream note holder was stitched to the first part of the main wallet. The first thing I did was to glue and secure half wallet for marking, hole punching and sewing.
Now that that was stitched I could work on the hinge. This is so the wallet could hinge open and close without pulling on or bunching the leather.
The wallet was folded and glued into place
Now I just need to mark, hole punch and stitch the second half of the wallet. So that it looked cosmeticly correct I did dummy stitching across the hinge so that it looked as if it was stitched all the way around. Then I trimmed off the excess leather and the leather was then coated with leather Balm to weatherproof it and protect it from cracking etc.
