How To Opt-In for Credit Card Offers
I love junk mail and pre-screened credit card offers. Targeted offers are often the most lucrative, providing 50,000, 75,000, 100,000. or even 150,000 points for meeting minimum spend requirements.
In looking through my Amex, Chase and Citi accounts, there are specific areas where you can explicitly request to be excluded from offers…or be included in them. I always want to be included. I’m ok getting mail and email that doesn’t particularly interest me if it means I’m open to getting some of these monster offers.
- American Express (must be signed in to your account): Profile > Communication & Alert Preferences > General Marketing Email Preferences > American Express Services > New Card and Credit Offers
- Chase Mailing Options (Chase Privacy Settings – must be signed in to your account)
- Citi (must be signed in to your account): Profile & Settings > My Communications > Edit Communication Options > Email Preferences > Send me email about my account and other products and services.
In addition to these options, directly with each creditor there are online resources put together to opt-in or opt-out of mail, email and phone calls from credit, insurance and marketing organizations.
We’ve chosen to opt-in to email and postal mail but opt-out of phone call solicitations. I don’t know about you but I’ve never heard of someone receiving a phone call about a great credit card offer. Email; yes. Postal mail; absolutely. Phone; never. Keep in mind that none of these guarantee you’ll receive amazing offers nor will they guarantee you’ll be removed from all lists. Organizations need to leverage these services and abide by the terms and conditions of them.

In addition to opting-in, you need to be a good candidate for a targeted offer. A solid credit score with a clean credit history are key to being targeted for great offers. Some offers may be regionally targeted, others on a specific age demographic and some may even be focused on an existing customer with an excellent relationship.
This last one is a mystical black box…but based on my experience I’ve only found these types of offers to be available to those that have an introductory or mid-tier product offered by a creditor with a top-tier product available.
A great example of this happened with my little brother. He had an American Express Business Gold card. but was targeted for an upgrade to an American Express Platinum Business card. Spending well over $200,000 a year on his credit card, he’s a loved customer of American Express.
His offer was to upgrade his card and spend $10,000 within a 3 month period; he would receive 50,000 bonus points. He didn’t need to open a new account; everything would transfer over…he just had to agree to the upgrade and the bump in annual fee.
He didn’t get this offer through any of the methods listed here, but rather he called and inquired if there were any special offers for him to upgrade his card to the Platinum card. A simple call and he was upgraded to a card he was planning on getting anyway.
