About An American in Paris
Based on the Oscar-winning film and the evergreen songs of George and Ira Gershwin, the story is set in Paris at the end of World War II, An American in Paris arrives on Broadway in a flurry of romance. American GI Jerry Mulligan decides to stay in the City of Light to advance his career as an artist. He soon meets and falls in love with Lise, a beautiful dancer. But she has promised to marry cabaret singer Henri, the son of the family who protected her during the war. In addition, Lise is persued by Adam, the composer of the new ballet she is dancing in. Christopher Wheeldon, artistic associate of the British Ballet Royale, makes his Broadway debut as director-choreographer with ballet stars Robert Fairchild and Leanne Cope in the leads. The
cast includes Tony nominee Veanne Cox (Company, La Cage Aux Folles ), Jill Paice (Matilda ), Brandon Uranowitz (Baby, It’s You ), and Max von Essen (Evita ).
An American in Paris also features a book by Tony nominee and Pulitzer Prize finalist Craig Lucas (Prelude to a Kiss ), sets and costumes by six-time Tony winner Bob Crowley (Once, Mary Poppins ), and lighting by three-time Tony winner Natasha Katz (The Glass Menagerie, Once ).

George Gershwin composed the jazz symphony An American in Paris after a visit to the French capital in 1928. He bought French taxi horns to use in the orchestra to replicate their sounds for the piece which was inspired by a walk along the Champs-Elysees.
