A Clever Accumulator Bet Strategy

what is a trixie bet

January 21 2015

As many of you may know I am not a big advocate of accumulator or exotic bets in horse racing. I believe it is hard enough to find an edge, without giving it back to the bookies by requiring multiple selections to win or place. This does not however mean that I have or will never do them again but you have to realise that the odds are significantly stacked against you.

Having said that, I do know that many punters enjoy a Trixie, Yankee or Lucky 15 on a Saturday and the appeal of that potential big win from low stakes. They can also make for some sensational headlines when they come in or a great topic for discussion down the pub when that final selection gets beaten by a neck to prevent a large windfall.

Whether the accumulator is my favoured type of bet or not is irrelevant, I like to give bring interesting thoughts and views from across many different elements and angles of horse racing, and hopefully those of you that do like an exotic bet of any description may find this interesting.

I came upon this system/strategy for betting multiple selections in late 2014 and I have to say it did raise my interest. The principle of the system is to bet six selections but it only consists of 10

actual bets, 5 doubles, 4 trebles and 1 fourfold. The beauty of it is, that whilst it is not a full perm each of the combinations above stand on their own merits.

The actual system suggests that you use the main meeting of the day (most prize money) and then bet the six selections as follows;

Races; 1&2, 2&3, 3&4, 4&5 and 5&6

Trebles (non consecutive numbers)

Races; 1,3&5, 1,3&6, 1,4&6 and 2,4&6

This was all the system stated in the version I came across, but having looked into in more detail I would suggest considering the following additions also.

1/ The system should be used on your top 6 selections for the day and not just restricted to one race card

2/ As you are unlikely to hit many fourfolds you should maximise the opportunity to hit the trebles and therefore your strongest selections (best chance of winning in your opinion, not necessarily lowest odds) should be prioritised in races 1&6 first and then 3&4 second and finally 2&5

This is a very clever little system for accumulator bets especially given the total bet is only 10pts and definitely worth exploring further if this is the type of bet you like.

Why not give it a try or perhaps paper trade it and let me know what you think!!
