So after finding out that I too have these infamous phantom bugs. My first task was to get them to stop biting us so we can sleep at night. After smathering my homemade repellent on me and my daughter we noticed a significant decrease in the biting. Not a cure all as I sometimes still feel them crawling on me but this was one giant successful step for us. If interested here are a few recipes:

Repellent Solution A

2 Tbsp of Sweet Almond Oil or Jojoba Oil

15 drops of Lemongrass Essential Oil

5 drops of Citronella Essential Oil

Pour together into a small spray bottle (I used glass ones), shake very well, and apply liberally all over body, I sprayed some in my hand and then applied to my face.

Repellent Solution B

2 Tbsp of Sweet Almond Oil or Jojoba Oil

10 drops of Rosemary Essential Oil

7 drops of Cinnamon Essential Oil

3 drops of Cedarwood Essential Oil

Pour together into a spray bottle, shake very well, and apply liberally all over body, I sprayed some in my hand and then applied to my face. I thought the cinnamon would burn but it does not. If you are allergic to almonds use the Jojoba Oil or Coconut Oil.

Each essential oil should cost around $6-$7 each but will last a long time.

What does not work:

Diatomaceous Earth food grade (learned the hard way, what a mess. )

What will kill them:

Bleach (not diluted) will kill them but it takes a long time (and it is very harsh on you and your environment)

Rubbing Alcohol (not diluted) but you have to douse them.

A cinnamon concoction of 1 cup of water, 2 tsp of dish soap, and 40 drops of cinnamon essential oil mixed and shaken in a spray bottle. I do

know when doused with it def kills them, trying to figure out if a mist will eventually kill them. I also spray a mist high in the air since these guys fly and jump very high. Please be careful with allergies and cinnamon and other oils.

If you have them in your house they will eventually get in your car.

Testing Incenses:

Lemongrass incense

Citronella incense

Not sure if this is working but it sure smells good. -)

(Make sure they are all natural and hand rolled, some incenses have chemicals and you don't want that burning in your house.)

7/1/2015 UPDATE:

We were able to sleep through the night after applying the above body repellent solution and spraying the mattress, sheets, pillows, and base of the bed with the above cinnamon and soap concoction. This will be an ongoing battle for a while but I do believe it is one that can be won.

7/2/2015 UPDATE:

We have had a lot less bites lately and my husband, daughter and I are still sleeping through the night with no bites with the help of the body oil repellents. We still have the pests but not as many, still lighting incense and spraying the cinnamon/soap concoction in the house and each room.

For those who have these nasty guys in the crotch region, a very simple solution is to take a thin sanitary pad and spray about 5 times one of the bug repellents mentioned above into the pad and attach to underwear. Works great for guys too! (The ladies should get a kick out of this one.) This is the only time my husband and I have had a good laugh during this dilemma. -)

Ours cars do have the bugs and I lit 3 cedarwood incenses at one time in the car, rolled up the windows and let the smoke permeate for a couple of hours and VOILA, no more bugs!
