Things You'll Need
Copy of your auto insurance policy
Review your auto insurance policy. It is always a good idea to read through your policy very carefully every time you renew it. That way you will know all the details about what you are entitled to if you are in an accident and what you can claim. After you have been in a car accident, you will want to get the policy back out and review it so the details are fresh in your mind.
Call your insurance agent and report the accident. Do this as soon as possible after the car accident has occurred. If you have a camera or a cell phone with a camera, take a few pictures of the accident scene.
Fill out and submit your written statement. Each auto insurance company works a little differently,
but just about every company will want you to file your own written statement or fill out its forms explaining all the details of the car accident. You should include every detail you can recall, including the cause of the accident, a detailed list of injuries and any witnesses. Information on other vehicles and other persons involved in the accident will also need to be included. If you were able to take photos at the accident scene, include these as well.
Keep written records of everything related to the car accident. This includes details of every conversation you have had with your insurance agent as well as receipts for all repairs and doctor bills.
If you feel the settlement is not fair, do not take it as final. Negotiate with your insurance agent until you are satisfied with what the company has offered.
