Apr 30, 2007 at 11:18 AM You'd have to have some idea of what life insurance company he might have owned a policy with. There are over 1000 possible companies. If you knew which company, you could easily call to inquire as to whether your father actually had a policy with them, and who the beneficiaries are. Byron Udell Says:

I'm sorry for your loss. Locating a life insurance policy can be tough, but before you spend money to hire a service to look for a lost life insurance policy owned by your father, try these steps:

1. Contact your father's bank for copies of old checks or go through canceled checks. He might have paid his life insurance bills by check. The insurance company's name was probably written on these checks.

2. Your father might have paid premiums by credit card, so you might want to check old credit card statements.

3. Contact past/current employers to see if your father had group life insurance

4. Contact the treasury department in the state in order to see where the policy was purchased. As unclaimed property, death benefits might turn up there usually after three to five years. Yousef Ahmed Says:

Dec 29, 2009 at 7:05 AM I have lost contact with my father the last 5 years. He always told me he had

a life insurance policy and was sick the last time I talked to him. How can I find out if he had a policy and with what company. I may be the beneficiary. Thank You Byron Udell Says:

Dec 26, 2009 at 3:23 AM My father just passed on 12/24/09. I have been told that he has a life insurance policy and 401k and savings. I do not know how to go about any of this. If someone has any advice that could help please let me know. Do I need to get a lawyer? tg Says:

Dec 18, 2009 at 9:06 PM If you knew a company had a life insurance policy on your father, before he died you would have to have been power of attorney and request a copy of the beneficiary page of the policy. They only mail it to the house listed on the policy, so your stepmother would get it unbeknownst to you. Basically the same thing after he dies, the policy payout would go to the surviving spouse, unless you're listed as beneficiary. Exact same thing just happened to me.
