Basic Eligibility Criteria:

Medicare Alabama, as the name makes clear, is available only to residents of the state of Alabama. Medicare itself is a national health insurance scheme available to citizens across the states, but there are certain trivial differences between the Medicare plans for the various states. Individuals who are 65 years of age and above are eligible for Medicare Alabama. Individuals who are differently-abled or are suffering from end-stage renal complications are also eligible for Medicare Alabama even if they are not 65 years of age yet.

Individuals who are 65 years and above:

  • If an individual, who is 65 years of age and is already collecting Social security benefits or Railroad Retirement benefits or any other benefits offered by the federal government, he or she is automatically eligible for and is enrolled into Medicare Alabama by the Social Security Administration of the area of residence.
  • If you are 65 years of age and are not a resident of the 50 states or D.C. but are eligible for automatic and free enrollment in Part A of Medicare, you will have to pay for Part B.
  • If the individual is 65 years of age and is not a

    beneficiary of Social Security or federal benefits, contacting Social Security Administration of the area of residence shall make him/her eligible for Medicare Alabama.

Individuals who are below 65 years of age:

  • If you have been receiving Social Security Disability benefits for a minimum period of 24 months, you become automatically eligible for Medicare Alabama at the end of the period mentioned.
  • If you are suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Disease, enrollment into Medicare becomes automatic at the end of the said period. If, however, you are suffering from end-stage renal diseases, enrollment can be done after contacting the Medicare authority.

Eligibility Period:

The Initial Enrollment Period starts three months before an individual’s 65 th birthday and ends seven months after it. This is the time when an individual, who qualifies for Medicare Alabama, must apply and complete the necessary paperwork. If he or she misses this period, penalties may be imposed based on the particularities of individual cases. The General Enrollment Period can also be used for application and completing of paperwork. This period begins from the 1 st of January to 31 st March every year.
