What does Buildings insurance cover me for?

Our Buildings insurance covers the entire structure of your home, including roofs, walls, fences, hedges, gates and outbuildings, plus permanent building fixtures like fitted kitchens/wardrobes. You'll be protected from a wide range of buildings risks, including fire, explosion, storm or flood (excluding fences, hedges and gates), theft, vandalism and subsidence. What does Contents insurance cover me for?

Our Contents insurance will cover you for items within your home including office equipment such as computers, office furniture, fax machines and printers, jewellery, watches, TVs, cameras, personal money in the home, contents in the garden and food in the freezer. What optional extras can I add to my policy?

You can add a number of optional extras to your policy including:

Personal Possessions cover (for Contents insurance) offers you a choice of Unspecified or Specified cover. Unspecified cover includes personal items, laptops, valuables and clothing normally worn or carried outside the home. Specified cover is for items which are more valuable than the limits provided by Unspecified cover and for other specialised articles and equipment. HomeRescue Plus (Home emergency cover) for just 12p in your first year. (Reverts to £24 after the first year). You can protect your home against unexpected emergencies. This covers up to £250 for emergency repairs, for example failure of boilers or leaking pipes (Provided the boiler has been serviced in the last 12 months and is not over 15 years old).

Accidental damage will protect your buildings and contents against accidents, from minor mishaps to major DIY catastrophes. Find out whats included with accidental damage cover.

What is the difference between standard accidental damage cover and the optional extra?

As standard, you will be covered for:

Buildings insurance: accidental damage to underground drains, pipes and cables and accidental breakage to fixed glass and sanitary fittings.

Contents insurance: accidental damage to specific items in your home such as TV's, DVD equipment, audio and video equipment, computer equipment (but not portable items such as laptops), and breakage of fixed glass in furniture, mirrors and ceramic in hobs.

If you require wider cover for accidental damage, like putting your foot through a ceiling or DIY accidents i.e drilling through a pipe or spilling paint on your carpet you can add optional accidental damage cover to your policy.

What is HomeRescue Plus or Home Emergency Cover? Is there a difference?

HomeRescue Plus provides you with Home Emergency cover of up to £250. You can protect your home against emergencies for just 12p in your first year (Reverts to £24 after your first year).

Can I add HomeRescue Plus if I am a landlord or a tenant?

Cover is not available if you are a tenant or a landlord and not living at the address to be insured.

What is the Contents sum insured?

The sum insured is the maximum amount which we will pay in respect of loss of or damage to the contents. We will estimate a minimum contents sum insured based on the size of your home. This will be detailed when you get a quote .

You should check that the amount is suitable for your needs.

Please ensure that you are not under insured as the full cost to replace lost or damaged items may not be paid out.

What is the Buildings sum insured?

Our Buildings insurance provides cover for the repair or rebuilding cost of the buildings of your home up to £500,000.

Please ensure that you are not under insured as the full cost to replace lost or damaged items may not be paid out.

Can I change my Contents sum insured?

We estimate a minimum sum

insured based on the size of your home to ensure you have sufficient cover in place. You can choose a higher sum insured but cannot reduce it.

Are carpets covered under Contents or Buildings insurance?

Carpets can be moved from room to room, or house to house. We consider these as covered under our Contents insurance.

With Personal Possessions insurance will I be covered if I lose or damage my mobile phone?

Your mobile will be covered under our Unspecified Personal Possessions insurance and we will cover up to £250 and £25 for calls made on the phone from the time of the loss, and subject to the normal terms and exclusions of the policy.

If the cost of replacing your mobile phone exceeds £250 we may be able to provide cover under Specified Personal Possessions, please contact our sales team for a quote.

How do I make a claim on my home insurance?

You can contact our claims helpline on 0345 9998 888^ Lines are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If your claim is not urgent, you can complete our online claims form.

Are my fences and driveway covered through my Buildings insurance?

Yes your fences and driveways are covered against loss or damage caused by an insured event. However, hedges, gates and fences are not covered for damage caused by floods or storm.

Can I insure my bicycle outside the home?

Yes, if your bicycle is worth less than £1,000 you will need to add Unspecified Personal Possessions cover to your policy. If you need more cover than this you will need to add it as a Specified Personal Possession.

There is no cover for loss of any pedal cycle left in a public place unless it is locked to a fixed point.

Are my dentures covered under Personal Possessions insurance?

Our Contents insurance will cover dentures in the home, but only against the risks specified such as fire and theft. Cover in the home can be extended to include accidental damage, but to ensure full cover for dentures, including accidental loss or damage outside the home you will need to add Unspecified Personal Possessions cover to your policy; this will provide up to £2,000 cover, which is the maximum under our policy since we will not insure dentures as Specified Personal Possessions.

Is my contents cover new for old?

Yes, except for clothing and household linen.

Will you cover my hearing aids?

Our Contents insurance will cover hearing aids in the home, but only against the risks specified such as fire and theft. Cover in the home can be extended to include accidental damage, but to ensure full cover for your hearing aid. including accidental loss or damage outside the home you will need to add Unspecified Personal Possessions cover to your policy; this will provide up to £2,000 cover, which is the maximum under our policy since we will not insure hearing aids as Specified Personal Possessions.

How do I cancel my home insurance policy?

If you wish to cancel the policy please contact us on 03457 46 46 46 ^, lines are open from 8am-8pm Monday to Friday, from 8am-5pm on Saturday and from 9am-4pm on Sunday, or write to Home Insurance, Customer Processing Services, The Co-operative Insurance, Miller Street, Manchester M60 0AL.

If you cancel the policy within 14 days of receipt of the policy document the premium you have paid will be returned to you less a pro-rata charge for any time on cover.

To be entitled to a pro-rata refund of the premium paid, you must telephone us or write to us on or before the 14th day of receipt of the policy document and the cancellation effective date requested must be within this period.

If you cancel your policy after this time any refund of premium will normally be the premium paid less premium at our short period rates for the period the policy has been in force.

Please note that a refund is not normally allowed if you cancel the Travel section.

How do I make a change to my policy?

To make a change to your policy cover (other than renewal) or if you request duplicate documents, we may charge you an administration fee of £12.50. This fee will be in addition to any increase in premium that may occur.
