When Do I Sign Up for Medicare?

when do i sign up for medicare

One of the most common questions for people turning 65 is how and when to sign up for Medicare. Medicare starts at age 65, unless you qualify prior to that through reason of medical disability. For the purposes of this article, we are going to speak specifically about those turning 65 and going on Medicare at that time.

There are two instances that we are going to look at regarding signing up for Medicare. First of all, let’s look at how to sign up if you are already receiving Social Security as you approach your 65th birthday. In this case, you should receive your Medicare card automatically. This comes approximately three months in advance of your Medicare start date. Medicare always starts the 1st day of the month you turn 65.

Also, if you are already receiving Social Security, Medicare assumes you wish to sign up for Medicare Parts A AND B. Medicare Part A is paid for through the payroll taxes you have paid in to “the system”, so there is no additional cost to you for that (assuming you have worked the minimum amount). Medicare Part

B has a premium of $104.90/month. This will be taken as a deduction from your Social Security check. So if this is your situation – you are already receiving Social Security – and you want to go on Medicare as primary coverage, you do not have to do anything additional to sign up for Medicare unless you do NOT receive the card in advance of your 65th birthday. In that case, you should contact a local Social Security office or call Social Security at 800.772.1213.

If, however, you are not already receiving Social Security, you should contact a local Social Security office or call them at the number above (800.772.1213) to make sure that they enroll you in Medicare at age 65. We would recommend doing this approximately three months in advance of the date you want Medicare to start. If you wish to sign up for Medicare but NOT receive Social Security, you can enroll in Medicare online at: http://www.ssa.gov/medicareonly/ .
