Birth certificates are necessary for a variety of different things ranging from registering for school to applying for a passport. While the process of getting a copy is not difficult, it does become more complicated when you are requesting it without a license. In order to do this, you must still find a method to prove your identification. There are several ways to accomplish this, but it varies from state to state. Because of this, it is important to contact the Vital Records office in the state you were born.
Figure out where you need to
go. To find out the nearest office location, go to www.vitalrec.com and click on the state that you were born. This will let you know what documentation is needed and how you might be able to make the request. Some areas might let you make the request through a fax machine or email instead of having to go in person. However, it will depend on the individual office.
Give yourself enough time. Certified birth certificates can take up to a month for you to receive it. If you are applying for a birth certificate in order to travel, then you need to make sure you have it on time to get your passport.
