The basic food hygiene certificate is mandatory for people who intend to work in the food and beverage industry and it is a minimum legal requirement for anyone handling or preparing food. The main purpose of this basic food hygiene certificate is to help people gain the knowledge and to equip them in the ways of preparing, cooking, handling, and storing of food so as to prevent food borne illnesses from occurring and to safeguard the health of the consumers.
The basic food hygiene certification comprises of three sectors i.e. the catering, the retail, and the manufacturing sectors. The catering sector comprises of food handlers in the hotels, restaurants, fast food outlets, hospitals, schools, etc. The retail sector comprises of food handlers in supermarkets, grocery stores, and market stalls as well as the butchers and the bakers. The manufacturing sector comprises of
food handlers who process, pack, and store food. You can gain the appropriate certificate depending on the sector that you work in or intend to work in.
Most employers offer basic food hygiene training on their premises, but even otherwise there are plenty of courses available online that offer the basic food hygiene certification. The duration of the course is usually about 2-3 hours or at the most it is a one-day program. The assessment is made from a multiple choice examination where you get to choose from multiple options. You will need to score at least 70% to make the grade. Also, while there is no expiry date specified on the certificate it is advised to undergo the refresher training every three years just so you are made aware of the latest developments.
The working environment is another important component of the basic food hygiene certificate program. In this one will be taught how to clean and sterilize the area of work and this will also include cleaning the items being used like the knives, spoons, utensils, cutting boards, etc. as doing this will keep any form of cross contamination from occurring.
