Order a birth certificate

You can order a birth certificate online from the General Register Office Northern Ireland (GRONI). Please note this service is chargeable and you will need a credit or debit card.

How to use this service

The General Register Office cannot issue a certificate if full details are not supplied when the certificate application is made. Please note that for the purposes of detection and prevention of crime, information about your application may be passed on to other government or law enforcement agencies.

You can also use this service to order a commemorative birth certificate.

Information required to order a birth certificate

Birth certificates are available from 1864 to present.

Your application must include:

  • full name of person whose birth certificate is required
  • date and place of birth (district or street and town)
  • names of parents (including mother's maiden name)
  • mother's address at time of birth

What if I don't have a debit or credit card?

If you do not have a credit or debit card, an application form can be printed and sent by post, enclosing a cheque or postal order.

Fees

Full certified copy of a birth certificate £15.00

Where two or more full certified copies of the same entry are applied for at

the same time, the first copy will be charged at £15.00 and any additional copies at £8.00 each.

Commemorative birth certificate £40.00

Commemorative certificates are now available from the General Register Office to mark special occasions, such as a wedding anniversary or a significant birthday. The certificate is printed on specially-designed paper, mounted in a frame and comes in a custom-made presentation box.

Please note that these certificates are for commemorating a significant event only and do not have any legal or evidential value. If you require a certified copy of an entry for any other purpose, please apply for a full certified copy of a certificate.

Short birth certificate £15.00

A short certificate shows only the surname, name, sex, date of birth and (in most cases) the district of birth. A short certificate is generally only accepted as proof of age.

Please note that to get either a UK or Irish Passport, a full birth/adoption certificate is required.

Priority certificate £35.00

On payment of a priority fee, applications received before 2.30 pm will be dispatched the same working day. Applications received after 2.30 pm, at weekends or during public holidays will be dispatched on the next working day.
