PORT COLBORNE, Ont. – John Waters of Whitesville, NY started on the pole for the 30-lap RUSH Dirt Late Models Series Northern Tour event at New Humberstone Speedway in Port Colborne, Ont. and never relinquished the point position on route to the victory. The win scored Waters a cool $2000 payday in the event dubbed the Canadian Late Model Nationals.

Waters started on the front row with Randy Hall of Olean, NY and jumped out to an early lead from the pole position, quickly building a full straightaway advantage and hit lapped traffic on lap six.

“It started to become fun going through traffic. I could pick and choose my line. This car was phenomenal. It didn’t matter if I threw it up on the cushion or rolled around the bottom,” said Waters following the race.

As Waters maneuvered through the traffic flawlessly, Bryce Davis of Hornell, NY was on the fly after starting sixth. Davis passed Ward Schell of Warren, Pa and Hall to vault in to the second spot.

Waters’ lead was erased by a lap 11 caution after W.L. Stile of Muse, Pa and Steve Lebarron of Troubsberg, NY tangled and spun in turn two. Davis couldn’t hang with Waters on the ensuing restart, but the caution flew again a lap later as a result of contact between Paul Grigsby and of Springville, NY and Jeff Dayman of Welland, Ont. sending Dayman in to the front stretch wall.

The following restart was short lived as Niagara Falls, Ont, pilot Sam Pennacchio rolled to a stop in turn one to bring out another yellow. Dennis Lunger Jr. of Albion, Pa. was penalized for jumping the restart on the outside of Waters, moving him back a row.

On lap 14, Rob Pietz of Port Colborne, Ont. went for a wild ride exiting turn two, getting off balance and nearly flipping. Pietz came to a stop on the backstretch to bring out the yellow, but managed to rejoin the field.

The ensuing restart produced a melee in turn three after several cars tried to avoid a slow Max Blair of Centreville, Pa, who suffered a flat tire. Eric Wilson of Courtland, OH suffered the worst of the damage and went off on the hook.

Davis made the most of the restart and quickly passed Schell for second. Lunger followed suit to take third

and Humberstone regular Colton Ledingham raced to fourth.

A 12-lap green flag run allowed Waters to rebuild his lead to a full straightaway over Davis, but it was all erased when Pietz rolled to a stop on the backstretch with 27 complete. Waters elected to use the bottom lane on each restart despite the majority of the field running against a thick cushion.

“There was still tons of traction on the bottom, so I wasn’t too worried, but I was worried somebody could get a good run up there,” said Waters. “That’s the gamble you take, I guess.”

Davis did his best to keep Waters honest on the restart, but the No.11w couldn’t be tamed over the final three laps. Davis held off Lunger for second while Hall passed Ledingham on the final corner to claim fourth.

“We had a great car tonight. John just out-powered us,” said Davis following the event. “We came in to tonight all setup for a slick track and had to back it all off before time trials. We didn’t make too many adjustments, left the car pretty neutral and just ran it.”
