E-Filed Tax Returns

The IRS has become a high tech machine. Well, sort of. The machine doesn’t always work all that well, but the agency is trying to go digital to save a few million trees. This means it is coercing tax payers to file electronically. The carrot that is being hung in front of you as an enticement is a quick issuance of the refund. If you choose to have the refund wired to your bank account, it can appear in as little as two weeks. If you prefer to receive a check, the time is two to four weeks.

Snail Mail Tax Returns

The majority of people still file their tax

returns by snail mail. With the outrageous increases in postal cost, this may become less so but it is what it is at the moment. If you took this approach, the filing process is more onerous for the IRS. They have to receive and assign your return to the right area. They then have to scan it, check for any scanning errors and so on. It takes longer to get into the system and thus longer to get your tax refund processed. This means most tax refunds for mailed in tax returns can take one to two months to be mailed out.
