Each job with the federal government, including the IRS is categorized into General Schedule levels to denote level of employment, which determines qualifications and pay scale. Let’s take a look at the qualifications for the various GS levels for an Internal Revenue Agent – a highly employable job with the IRS. Internal Revenue Agents are considered to be an

entry-level position with the IRS; however, the position offers an accelerated career trajectory from GS-5 to GS-11 with little competition providing an excellent place to cultivate a lasting career.

For specific careers such as an Internal Revenue Agent, qualifications typically include a US citizenship, bachelor’s degree or higher in accounting from an accredited college or university that include at least 30 semester hours in accounting or experience.

Consider some of these other requirements for a position as an Internal Revenue Agent with the IRS at GS-5:

  • A bachelor’s degree or higher in accounting from an accredited college or university, including at least 30 semester hours in accounting
  • A Certificate as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) acquired through written examination in a state, territory or the District of Columbia
  • A combination of education and experience that included at least 30 semester hours in accounting

For advancement to a GS-7 status, you must meet the GS-5 requirements for an Internal Revenue Agent as well as one of the following:

  • Superior academic achievement
  • A 3.0 overall GPA on a 4.0 scale or a 3.5 GPA in all accounting courses
  • Ranked in the upper one-third of your graduating class
  • Membership in a national scholastic college honorary society
  • At least one year of graduate education in accounting, business, finance, law, economics, management, statistical/quantitative methods or computer science
  • At least one year of experience equivalent to the GS-5 level
  • At least one year of combined graduate education and experience

To qualify for the GS-9 status, you must meet the GS-5 and GS-7 requirements as well as one of the following:

  • A master’s degree or two academic years of graduate education in accounting, business, finance, law, economics, management, statistical/quantitative methods or computer science
  • At least one year of experience equivalent to the GS-7 level
  • At least one year of combined graduate education and experience that exceeds that used to qualify for the GS-7 level

Most promotions occur every year based on the acquirement of new skills and advanced education. The General Schedule pay scale provided by the IRS show that a GS-5 employee can earn up to $35,657 annually with GS-11 employees making up to $65,371 annually.
