Claiming tax back under 18. How.

Hi there,

I'm 17 (birthday just gone) and in a job where I am earning around Ј14,000.

It was my second pay day today (already had one in June with 2 weeks pay at Ј16 tax) and I was taxed Ј160 or something today

Hi there,

I'm 17 (birthday just gone) and in a job where I am earning around Ј14,000.

It was my second pay day today (already had one in June with 2 weeks pay at Ј16 tax) and I was taxed Ј160 or something today

How do I claim this back, I believe I can up until Ј5000 and because I am under 18?

I have tried googling but not found anything!

Thanks

I'm afraid you don't get any tax concessions because you are under 18.

You are able to earn

a certain amount tax free - as everyone is. Check your tax code - it should say something like 536L. This would mean you get Ј5360 per annum tax free.

The next Ј1500 per year above your tax code, is taxed at 10%. Then the rest above that is taxed at 22% (unless you earn above approx Ј38k a year, and then anything above this amount is taxed at 40%).

You will pay 11% in National Insurance on anything above your tax code.

If you haven't worked from April until now - then, providing you have signed a P46 form, you will be taxed less each week as tax is calculated pro-rata (from 6th Apr to 5th Apr the following year). Your payroll department will take in to account that you won't earn Ј14k between now and April, and tax you accordingly.

Hope that helps.
