Excessive sweating, which is called hyperhidrosis, isn’t a serious medical condition, but it can be very embarrassing and uncomfortable. Everyone sweats when they work out or they are feeling a little nervous, but for people who suffer with hyperhidrosis, their condition means that they sweat so much that they are forever conscious of the damp patches under their arms, or elsewhere on their clothes and skin. 1. Dress to hide the sweat

The first immediate solution to the problem of sweat showing on your clothes is to wear colours that don’t show up the damp patches so clearly. Very dark colours, such as black or navy blue, don’t show the wet patches and nor do light colours, such as white. The worst colours for visible damp patches are the light, bright colours like blue and grey.

2. Wear a vest

Another good tip on how to stop excessive sweating is to wear a vest. It may sound counterintuitive to put on a another layer clothing when you are already sweating too much, but wearing a breathable undershirt, or vest, even in hot weather, will soak up a lot of the sweat before it becomes visible on your outer clothing.

3. Antiperspirants

Antiperspirants work by clogging up the sweat glands so that the sweat is less of a problem. If you find that the usual brands aren’t effective enough for you, then you can get very strong antiperspirants on prescription from your doctor. These can irritate the skin, though, so only use them as prescribed.

4. Cut down on spicy foods

Another tip on how to stop excessive sweating is to cut down on spicy foods. Sadly for food lovers who also sweat a lot, the advice is to eat more bland food. Hot and spicy food that contains pepper and chillies will make you sweat more and food that contains a lot of garlic and onions will also make your perspiration smell more too. The best thing to do is to leave eating your favourite spicy curry dish for when you have a night in at home.

overheated more easily and you will sweat more. Basically, everything that you do will take you more effort and that will mean that your sweat glands will go into overdrive, as they try and cool you down. Shedding a few pounds, could be a simple way to reduce the amount that you sweat.

6. Drink sage tea

Next tip on how to stop excessive sweating is to drink sage tea. Sage is often recommended by physicians as a treatment for excessive sweating and it can be used internally, as well as topically. Regular consumption of sage tea, which you make by adding fresh sage leaves to boiling water, is said to reduce sweating, as is applying cold sage tea topically to the areas of skin where you sweat from the most. For sweaty feet, putting some dried sage in your shoes is also said to reduce sweating and foot odour.

7. Baking soda

Another good tip on how to stop excessive sweating is to use baking soda. Quite simply, you can use baking soda like a talcum powder and you can dust it under your arms, or onto other areas of your body where the sweating is particularly severe. Baking soda is said to dry up the sweat, block the sweat glands, and it will reduce body odour too.

8. Prescription medicines

In more severe cases of excessive sweating, you can get medication from your doctor. There is a group of medicines known as anticholinergics and antimuscarinics, which work by interrupting the nerve signals from the brain to the sweat glands to reduce sweating. Such medicines are available both to take orally and to be applied to the skin. There can be side effects, though from some of these treatments, which can include a dry mouth, difficulty passing urine and stomach cramps.

9. Iontophoresis

Iontophoresis is a treatment that is usually used to cure cases of excessive sweating of the hands and feet. It involves the passing of a mild electric current through water to the skin, which blocks the sweat glands. The treatment does not cause any real pain, but it can be uncomfortable and it can cause skin irritation.

10. Botox injections

Botox injections can also be used to treat hyperhidrosis. Approximately fifteen injections will be made to each area of the skin affected and that will stop the signals getting from the brain to the sweat glands, which is what makes you sweat. The treatment is effective for about several months, after which it will need to be repeated.
